May is International Posture Month

Dr. Kelvin Ng ·

Every May, chiropractors and health professionals around the world observe International Posture Month — a time to raise awareness about the importance of good posture for overall health and wellbeing.

What Is Good Posture?

Good posture means keeping your body in alignment so that the least possible strain is placed on muscles, joints, and ligaments during movement and weight-bearing activities. In a healthy standing posture, your ears, shoulders, hips, knees, and ankles should all be roughly in line when viewed from the side.

Why Does Posture Matter?

Poor posture is more than just an aesthetic concern. Over time, it can lead to:

  • Back and neck pain — the most common complaint we see at our clinic
  • Headaches — often caused by tension in the neck and upper back from forward head posture
  • Reduced lung capacity — slouching compresses the chest, limiting full breathing
  • Fatigue — misaligned posture forces muscles to work harder than necessary
  • Nerve interference — poor spinal alignment can affect how well your nervous system functions

Common Posture Problems We See

Forward Head Posture (“Tech Neck”)

For every inch your head moves forward from its neutral position, it effectively adds about 4–5 kg of extra load on the neck muscles and spine. With the average person spending hours daily on phones and computers, this is increasingly common — even in children.

Rounded Shoulders

Often caused by prolonged sitting and poor desk ergonomics, rounded shoulders place strain on the upper back and can contribute to shoulder pain and restricted movement.

Anterior Pelvic Tilt

Where the pelvis tips forward, causing an exaggerated lower back curve. This is common in people who sit for long periods and have tight hip flexors.

5 Tips to Improve Your Posture This Month

  1. Check in with your posture regularly — set a reminder on your phone every hour to notice how you’re sitting or standing
  2. Strengthen your core — a strong core supports the spine in an upright position
  3. Stretch your chest and hip flexors — tight muscles pull the spine out of alignment
  4. Adjust your workspace — follow our ergonomic setup guide
  5. Get a posture check — visit us for a spinal assessment and personalised advice

How Chiropractic Helps

Chiropractic care addresses the root cause of poor posture by correcting vertebral subluxations — misalignments in the spine that interfere with proper nerve function and muscle balance. Regular chiropractic adjustments, combined with targeted exercises and lifestyle changes, can significantly improve your posture over time.

This May, take a moment to check in with your body. Good posture is one of the simplest investments you can make in your long-term health. Book an appointment if you’d like a professional assessment.
