Online Advice for Back Pain and Posture
Back pain is one of the most common health complaints in Singapore and worldwide, affecting people of all ages. With so much information available online, it can be hard to know what advice to trust. Here’s a practical guide to understanding back pain — and what to look out for when seeking help.
Understanding Back Pain
Not all back pain is the same. It helps to think of it in two broad categories:
Acute back pain comes on suddenly, often after a specific incident — lifting something heavy, a fall, or a sudden movement. It usually resolves within a few weeks with appropriate care.
Chronic back pain persists for more than three months. It may be caused by cumulative spinal wear, poor posture habits, muscle imbalances, or an unresolved underlying issue.
Common Causes of Back Pain
- Vertebral subluxation — misalignment of spinal bones causing nerve irritation
- Muscle strain or spasm — often from overexertion or poor lifting technique
- Disc problems — bulging or herniated discs pressing on nerves
- Poor posture — prolonged sitting or standing in a misaligned position
- Degenerative changes — wear and tear that accumulates over time
What Online Advice Gets Right
There is genuinely useful information available online about back pain:
- Staying active (rather than complete bed rest) is generally recommended for most types of back pain
- Heat or ice can provide temporary relief — ice for acute inflammation, heat for muscle tension
- Gentle movement such as walking is beneficial
- Ergonomic adjustments to your workspace can reduce recurring strain
What to Be Cautious About
However, online advice has real limitations:
- Generic exercises may not be appropriate for your specific condition. What helps one type of back pain can worsen another
- Ignoring red flags — seek urgent care if your back pain is accompanied by loss of bladder or bowel control, severe leg weakness, or follows a significant trauma
- Delaying professional care — if pain persists beyond 2–3 weeks, or keeps recurring, it’s important to identify and address the underlying cause
When to See a Chiropractor
You don’t need to be in severe pain to benefit from chiropractic care. Many patients come to us with mild-to-moderate back pain that has been present for months or years — often accepting it as “normal” when it doesn’t have to be.
Chiropractic care is particularly effective for back pain caused by vertebral subluxations, disc problems, postural issues, and repetitive strain. We will assess your spine, identify the source of the problem, and create a personalised care plan to address it.
